Not only is H&M a gift to us Anglos in Rome, keeping us dressed and fashionable all for a few euros, they also want to give us a behind the scenes tour of Rome! I stumbled on this when I was looking at the upcoming spring line. If you see something you like on the website you can put in your cell number and they text you when the clothing you want arrives to the store nearest you. I did this for a cute sweater I was dying for (and only 14.99!). I went the same day and there was a big pile! With MY size! Then I went 2 days later and the associate said they were gone and they weren’t getting anymore. Then I wondered how many cute things did I miss by not being informed…best not to think about it. SO in conclusion, It is a great service because you have a better chance of finding your size before the hoardes arrive and buy everything up.
So, back to the tour. This video follows a cute, bubbly blond of unknown origin (I think that is a British accent, but I can’t tell) as she spends 24 hours in the Eternal City. First stop is shopping on Via del Governo Vecchio, a few stores in between and then to Borghetto Flaminio. She also suggests a few restaurants one being Gusto, which I have been to and is very good, and Augustarello in Trastevere which I have never heard of (maybe Shelley knows it?). It is a pretty brief overview but it is definitely intriguing. I was expecting it to be a boring overview of all the usual crap, or consist of only the shops where you need a black Amex (it does feature a few, but says it is fun to get “inspiration” there). I haven’t been to the Borghetto Flamino, which seems like an antique-y Porta Portese, but I want to check it out. Ditto for the restaurant. Some of the other stores seems pricey, as does the chocolate massage at the Hilton, but it is cool to know this type of thing is available. I also want to go to the Swedish-Italian book bar, Salotto 42, which is owned by a Swedish model. It looks very hip and chic.
At the end, I wondered WHY H&M would make a video with that has nothing to do with H&M clothes. But I think they want to sell the image of young and trendy. Like, it can be possible to look cute (in H&M clothes), have this great life, and be able to afford eating and shopping in these places in the video (because you saved so much money at H&M). Hmmm…What is your take on the video? Have you been to these places? What do you think of H&M?
Now go check out the video and be sure to download the addresses to all the locations!

salotto 42 is indeed chic and super cool…fab cocktails and international (when we went…gazpacho and guacamole) snacks! call and reserve the 2 chairs right in front…
Yep, I know about Augustarello. The last time I ate there was before my blogging days. It’s a place with a lot of, shall we say, “character.” It’s always kind of tricky to get a table there… they don’t take reservations and it’s always packed, esp. in summer when there are a few tables out front as well. They write up your check at the end of the meal on the paper tablecloth and are always careful to point out that “Servizio non è incluso.” (meaning, TIP US). Service is pretty rough and tumble, but the food is good and relatively cheap. Once I saw Martina Stella (who lives around the corner from us) eating there.
I had a trip to the Rome H+M some months ago. I think the stuff they have in there is quite different to when they have in their UK stores. On their website I can’t figure out where the clothes are. Think I might be having a dim moment
HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and here is to 2008 being the best year yet!
Happy 2008! I hope it brings you lots of fun
Ah, I actually have the opposite problem! I’m so petite, that I have a hard time in California finding clothes that are small enough! Maybe there’s hope for me in Italy *sigh*…
Must admit I’m very intrigued about what Shelly said about Augustarello… I’ll keep that in mind!
I miss H&M so much! I wonder if it will ever arrive in Naples? Or ever sell online like Topshop and others?
Jessica, your blog is great! Really refreshing and fun read! I’ve added your blog to mine, I hope that’s ok!
